Modular Cath Lab installed at St. John's mobile field hospital.
Indianapolis, IN: Following one of the deadliest and most destructive tornadoes in U.S. history Modular Devices Inc. quickly responded to the disaster by providing St. John's Hospital with an interim modular cardiac cath lab to help restore the hospital's cardiac and vascular services. The modular cath lab arrived on Thursday June 9th, just a few weeks following the tornado and only one week after the opening of the mobile field hospital. By Tuesday June 14th the first cardiac cases had been performed in the modular cath lab.
Since St. John's Hospital suffered damage beyond repair Modular Devices Inc. deployed their largest modular cath lab building that can easily be relocated to a more permanent structure at a later date or even serve as a longer-term interim cath lab solution until a new hospital is eventually built.
The modular cath lab layout is a "double-wide" modular building and includes a procedure room with over 550 square feet of space - similar in size to many in-house cath labs. The modular lab is equipped with a state-of-the-art GE Innova® 4100 X-ray imaging system. The Innova® 4100 includes a 40cm digital flat detector and will allow St. John's to perform a variety of procedures including cardiac catheterization, peripheral vascular, implants and cardiac and peripheral interventions.
St. John's physicians and staff were eager to get their program back up and running quickly and they were very pleased to find that the temporary lab was not a mobile trailer but a large modular building. Reactions from the staff included "We love the cath lab", "both patients and staff love being in it" and "it feels just like we're inside the hospital".
